Root Canal Treatment in Altamonte Springs: What to Expect

Root canal treatment has a scary reputation, but its job is simple: it saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. With modern numbing, many patients say it feels similar to getting a filling.

What a root canal does

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected from deep decay, a crack, or an injury, it can cause pain and lead to an abscess. Root canal treatment removes that damaged tissue and seals the tooth so you can keep it.

Signs you might need one

- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the drink or food is gone

- Severe pain when you chew or bite

- Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a tooth

- A pimple-like bump on the gum

- A tooth that has turned darker

* Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the problem shows up on an x-ray. Only an exam can tell for sure.

What happens, step by step

1. Exam and x-rays to confirm the diagnosis.

2. Numbing so the area is fully comfortable.

3. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth.

4. Cleaning and shaping. The damaged pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned.

5. Filling and sealing. The canals are filled and the tooth is sealed.

6. A crown, in most cases. Back teeth especially need a crown afterward to protect them from breaking.

Recovery

It's normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers, taken as directed, usually help. Avoid chewing hard foods on that tooth until it has its final crown or filling. Call us if you have swelling or severe pain.

Root canal or extraction?

Keeping your natural tooth is usually the best choice. If a tooth is removed, it typically needs to be replaced with a bridge, a partial denture, or an implant to keep the other teeth from shifting.
