Porcelain veneers can change the look of your smile in just a few visits. But they're a permanent decision, so it's worth understanding what they can and can't do before you commit.
What veneers are
Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells bonded to the front of your teeth. They're made by a dental lab to match the shape and shade you and Dr. Jaicks choose together.
What veneers can improve
Chipped or worn edges
Small gaps between teeth
Stains that don't respond to whitening
Teeth that are uneven in size or shape
Teeth that look slightly crooked
Veneers change how teeth look. They don't correct how your teeth bite together.
Who is a good candidate?
Veneers work best when:
Your gums are healthy
There's no untreated decay
There's enough healthy enamel to bond to
If you grind or clench your teeth, veneers can still be an option, but we'll talk about ways to protect them.
What the process looks like
1. Consultation. We talk about your goals, take photos and x-rays, and make sure veneers are the right fit.
2. Preparation. A thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneers sit naturally. This step is permanent, which is why we plan carefully first.
3. Impressions. Your teeth are recorded so the lab can make your veneers. You'll wear temporaries in the meantime.
4. Bonding. Your final veneers are checked for fit and color, then bonded in place.
Most patients complete the process in two to three visits.
Veneers, whitening, or crowns?
If your teeth are healthy and you mainly want them brighter, whitening may be all you need.
If you want to change shape, close small gaps, or cover stains that won't whiten, veneers may be the better fit.
If a tooth is badly damaged or has a large filling, a crown may protect it better.
Whitening doesn't change the color of veneers, so if you want whiter teeth overall, it's best to whiten before your veneer shade is chosen.
Caring for your veneers
Brush and floss daily, just like natural teeth
Avoid biting ice, pens, or fingernails
Keep up with regular exams and cleanings
With good care, veneers can last many years.
